 HISTORY

The company was formed in Brussels in 1926 when Mr.Paul Heymans starts production of metal packaging, mainly for shoe polish.

This successful company knows a quick growth and takes  over the Belgo American Can Company in 1933, after which it changes its name to SOBEMI (Societé Belge d’Emballages Metalliques Industriels) and moves to Lint.
In the old buildings of a foundry the company will focus on the production of cans for the vegetable-, fruit- and meat-industry.

After the war the increased demand for metal packaging leads to the accelerated growth of the company and many new investments are done:

  • Production is expanded with a lacquering/printing department and an ends department.

  • In 1959 production of plastic bottles is started in Brussels

  • In 65-66 production of synthetic bottles for the chemical industry is started in a new factory in Oevel. The production of all flexible plastic packaging is then centralised here. Products as the well known green bottle from Dreft as well as any kind of shampoo, gel, luxury plastic packaging were manufactured in that plant.

  • In 1970 the product range is expanded further with the production of battery jackets. In close co-operation with Japanese companies as Panasonic, machinery as well as quality production methods were introduced in the plant in Lint. Based on this first experience, there was a lot of own development and improvement coming from the own co-workers that resulted in the biggest production plant for Battery Jackets in Europe.

  • In 1974 a coil cutting line from Littell is purchased and the lacquering/printing department is further extended with machinery from LTG-Mailänder

  • In 1980 the can department is completely modernized with the change from solder lines to welding lines from Soudronic. From ½ l. food cans to rectangular 5 l. oil cans formed the production portfolio.

  • Also in 1980 a brand new production plant is constructed in Lint for production of 2 piece cans 25 and 33 cl.  for the beverage industry. This factory could show off the highest production and quality standards possible in that period of time.

In the meantime the ownership of the company has also changed. After the decease of the founder in 1960 the company is sold to the Dutch company “Thomassen & Drijver”. In 1991 this company will join forces with the German “Smalbach Lubeca” to form the”Continental Can Europe group”.

In the nineties however the metal packaging business undergoes a lot of changes. In order to resist to the fluctuations in the market a new alliance was formed: IMPRESS METAL PACKAGING.

Production shifts within the group and in 2005 the Shetron Group acquainted the Coating, Printing and Battery Jacket activities and renamed it to: SHETRON-SOBEMI Europe nv. The goal is to make the company grow again and rebuild the success of the past. A new business plan is in execution. At this time the company presents itself as a professional and reliable Partner in Packaging throughout all Europe.
